With several Saffery Champness staff taking part, co-ordinating events, or volunteering for the Guernsey 2023 Island Games, the private client firm has shown its support for their efforts.

Saffery’s progressive flexible working policy – which allows all team members to manage their time without the restriction of core hours – has enabled those representing Guernsey to attend practices and take time away from the office for scheduled events.

Senior Trust Officer, Emilie Batiste (pictured), who will be representing Guernsey in the women’s basketball, said the firm’s support had enabled her to make the most of, what could be, a ‘once-in-a-lifetime opportunity’.

She explained: “I have been playing for 18 years, but this is my first time representing Guernsey in the Island Games. I have worked extremely hard, and it has been a massive commitment to prepare and train for these games.

“There are several costs involved when competing at a high level, including court fees, travel, equipment and kit. Saffery’s support has helped take the pressure off and allow me to focus on my training.

“I can’t wait to soak up the atmosphere of the Games. I feel proud to be representing Guernsey and the support from Saffery shows that they value both me and this special occasion.”

The Saffery workforce has a strong history of involvement in the Games, including Associate Director, Donna Brehaut, who has competed in four previous Island Games. Tax Manager, Tina Coutanche, was part of the island’s women’s cycling team in 1997 – the first year women were allowed to enter the Time Trial event.

Associate Director, Simon Murphy, is a former competitor and has been responsible for co- ordinating the Athletics at this year’s events. Senior Accountant, Lisa Staples, will be volunteering at several events and supporting her daughter who will be competing in swimming. Associate Director, Andy Russell, will also be volunteering alongside his wife, while Executive Chairman, Kelvin Hudson, will be contributing by driving a minivan to ferry competitors to and from events.

The Games have also presented an opportunity for the Guernsey team to meet Saffery Cayman Independent Director, Andrew Needham face-to-face, who will be travelling to the island to support his daughter, representing Cayman in golf.

Managing Director, Nick Batiste, said: “We are happy to be able to support our team members in the vast array of contributions they are making to the Island Games. Aside from their professional achievements, it is fantastic to have the opportunity to promote their accomplishments and recognise all the staff who have volunteered their time to support Guernsey in what is an incredibly important week for the island.”
