Local accountancy firm Cleland & Co has four of its 19 staff taking part in the Guernsey 2023 NatWest International Island Games.
Samantha Cox, Dave Mosely and Chloe Domaille are competing in basketball, triathlon and golf respectively, and Janet Unitt is volunteering with the St John Ambulance Service.
Cleland & Co offers a flexible working scheme, meaning that Samantha, Dave and Chloe have flexibility to practise, attend training sessions and compete in competitions. The scheme is part of Cleland’s commitment to the personal development of its team, alongside professional growth.
Chloe, who is a Trainee Accountant, said: “I’m looking forward to representing Guernsey and I can’t wait to see lots of green supporters flooding the golf course. I think we have a good chance at winning team and individual medals this year, as we have a strong youthful team, and the home advantage.
“Cleland have been extremely supportive in giving me time off when I have training or competitions to play in, which has allowed me to continue with my goals for golf whilst working my day job.”
Dave, Associate Director, said: “My preparation is going well; I’ve just come back from eight days of training in Lanzarote with some of the other men’s triathlon Guernsey Island Games team. I’m looking forward to a home Island Games and there being lots of local support, including from my friends and family.”
Cleland & Co are also looking to put forward some sponsorship for the Guernsey women’s basketball team, to supply them with t-shirts that will be worn before and after games.
Samantha, Director, said: “This is the first time we’ve had anyone compete in an Island Games, let alone three people, so it’s a great achievement. I think it’s really important when working to have something outside of work to commit and focus to, bringing that good work-life balance.
“Together with Janet’s work with St John Ambulance – keeping competitors and spectators safe and healthy – there’s going to be a very strong Cleland & Co presence at this year’s Games. We’re hoping that the rest of the team will come along and support us when they can too. I’m really looking forward to competing in July.”
Janet Unitt, who is Cleland & Co’s Company Secretarial Administrator, will be providing first aid cover for the higher-risk events and those where many spectators are anticipated. She will also have the opportunity to work with other St John volunteers joining from Australia, Gibraltar and the UK.
