Guernsey Cheshire Home residents, day visitors, staff and board members are cycling 290 miles for FCG EPIC Week 2018 next month

The 290 mile journey is the exact number of miles for a round trip from the Guernsey Cheshire Home to the site of the original Cheshire Home in Hampshire.

The Guernsey Cheshire Home are just one of a number of teams which are taking part in the week-long community event, which is sponsored by First Central Group (FCG) and starts on 2 July.  Organised by local endurance athletes Philip Smith and Warren Mauger, the FCG EPIC Week is an inclusive community event and the organisers are encouraging the whole island to take part.

This year the event will raise money locally for the Guernsey Cheshire Home and This Is EPIC, which supports projects to overcome poverty in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Nine of the 11 Cheshire Home residents and 13 day visitors will be using a MotoMed, a motorised movement therapy device, to complete the challenge. The 41 staff and five board members will be using a static bike to contribute towards the EPIC goal. A number of businesses, community groups, schools and individuals have all pledged to get involved during the week.

Mr Smith said: “It’s great to partner with the Guernsey Cheshire Home this year, to have them take part in the challenge as well as receiving an equal split of the money raised. We want Guernsey to be inspired by the actions of the home and take up an EPIC challenge of their own.”

Nic Mountain, Guernsey Cheshire Home Manager said: “We try to encourage our residents to do as much as they can, taking into account their individual abilities. Being active is important at all age ranges and residents here recognise that and get involved where possible. Donations are our life blood; without these vital funds the Home wouldn’t be here.”

Philip and Warren have also pledged to take participate in as many activities as they possibly can during the FCG EPIC Week.
