Guernsey International Insurance Association launches student conference

Students will dive into the deep end of Guernsey’s international insurance industry in a new event, launched by the Guernsey International Insurance Association.

They will learn about the key global role Guernsey plays in managing risk, and why some of the world’s largest companies choose Guernsey as their insurance jurisdiction.

‘Insuring the Future’, a new half-day conference for lower-sixth-form students (Year 12) is being held at the end of June, and will give attendees the opportunity to find out more about Guernsey’s international insurance industry and to work alongside key members of the Guernsey International Insurance Association (GIIA) during interactive sessions.

In groups, students will play the role of Guernsey insurance managers, working through a client case study, uncovering the company’s problem and test their knowledge and values to develop a solution. They will learn about the decision-making process multimillion-pound companies go through when deciding to set up in Guernsey. The case study will be brought to life by representatives from Landsec, one of the largest real estate companies in the UK, Zurich, one of the world’s largest insurers, and the Guernsey Financial Services Commission who will each provide insight and their perspectives.

Groups will be facilitated by volunteers from the insurance management industry. At the end of the half day, each team will present their solution to be reviewed by a panel of experts, and one team will be awarded with a prize. Industry veteran Deputy Mark Helyar will give a keynote speech, as well as sit on the panel of judges.

Guernsey has grown into Europe’s number one captive insurance domicile since the launch of the islands first ever captive vehicle in 1922, with just less than 600 insurance licensed vehicles now based on the island providing a wealth of career opportunities.

Adele Gale (pictured), Chair of the GIIA, said: “We’re really excited to launch this event for students; we want to engage with the younger generation and show them what a diverse, challenging and interesting career the international insurance industry in Guernsey can offer.

“Guernsey is known as a financial hub, but that alone doesn’t showcase the breadth of what the island has to offer for students finishing their A-levels. That’s why we’ve created ‘Insuring the Future’, to put the international insurance industry on the map for these students. From getting grain out of Ukraine, providing equal healthcare provision to employees of global firms to accelerating the construction of wind turbines, insurance is a force for good and we want to spread the word.”

Students can sign up for the conference with their Sixth Form teachers.
