Jersey nurse wins national award

A Jersey nurse is among just seven in the British Isles who have been recognised with a national award, and as part of her prize has been invited to a world-renowned conference.

Staff Nurse Lorraine McCauley from the Hospital’s Dermatology Department has been given a Rising Star Award by the British Dermatological Nursing Group (BDNG).

The awards are given to nurses, who are at the beginning of their dermatology nursing career, and recognise those who demonstrate excellence, innovation or a focus on patient-centred care.

As well as receiving the award, Lorraine has been invited to attend the World Congress of Dermatology – one of the largest international dermatological  conferences – in Singapore next July.

The 38-year-old who is originally from Derry but who has lived in Jersey for the past nine years, said: “I’m still in shock. I can’t believe that I have been given this opportunity to attend the World Congress in Dermatology. This will be an experience of a lifetime and I’m so grateful.”

The conference, which takes place every four years, enables specialists to showcase new knowledge, exchange clinical experiences and scientific research as well as to build professional networks.

Lorraine, who qualified as a nurse last July after undertaking her degree course in Jersey and who in the future would like to become a Dermatology Clinical Nurse Specialist, said: “The range of topics being covered will be extremely beneficial to my career in dermatology. I’m especially looking forward to networking with world-class dermatologists and learning about new treatments and all the latest technologies.”

Lorraine, who initially trained as a beauty therapist, decided in her mid-thirties that she wanted a career change and decided to study to become a nurse. As she did not have the required qualifications to start a nursing degree she spent a year studying GCSE Maths and then a further year completing an access course – all while working full-time as a beauty therapist.

Lorraine was nominated for the award by Rhea Butler, a Dermatology Clinical Nurse Specialist, who mentored her.

Rhea said: “Lorraine is a diligent and hardworking professional, who welcomes the opportunity for learning and development. She has received highly positive feedback from patients as an empathetic and understanding dermatology nurse, who makes time to explain treatments and understand the psychological impact of their skin conditions.

“The opportunity for her to attend congress is a fantastic opportunity for her learning and networking, and will prove invaluable throughout her career in dermatology.”
