Walkers to mentor students as it launches free inaugural business summer school

Following the success of the event in Guernsey last year, Walkers is now offering sixth form students in Jersey the chance to gain a real insight into the world of work whether in financial services, other important local industries, or as an entrepreneur.

The week-long Business School (afternoons) are running this summer on 4th to 8th July at St Helier Town Hall.

Walkers’ Business Summer School has been created to offer young people the opportunity to learn about life in the workplace, to meet the professionals and be involved in interactive sessions and to gain insight into the varied different career paths available in Jersey, including setting up a business and marketing and running it.

The WBSS will feature a mock board meeting; sessions with accountants, fiduciaries and bankers, a mock trial before former Bailiff Sir Michael Birt QC, an overview of Jersey law, and a “Meet the Entrepreneurs” session featuring James Mathewson of “the Pizza Box”

Members of Walkers’ own team, especially the younger lawyers, will be available throughout to share their own experiences in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

Walkers partner Alison Ozanne, who has led the development of the scheme across the Channel Islands, said: “We want this to be a highly informative and immersive experience that is as accessible as possible – we are not looking for polished CVs, just a simple, short statement from the candidate about how they would hope to benefit from attending.”

“There are some amazing career opportunities for young people in Jersey but young people need to be given the chance to understand and discuss the options. That is what we aim to achieve with the Walkers Business Summer School, and we look forward to seeing as many applications as possible from young Islanders who would like to be involved.”

The firm has offices in ten jurisdictions worldwide and employs more lawyers than any other offshore firm. Walkers has 12 partners in its Jersey office leading teams specialising in Insolvency & Dispute Resolution, Investment Funds & Corporate, Insurance, Banking & Finance, Private Capital & Trusts and Employment.

Anyone interested in applying for the Walkers Business Summer School should send a short statement about what they hope to get out of the experience to [email protected]
