Jersey States Members are being urged to support businesses in the budget
On the eve of the Government Plan debate, the Chief Executive of the Jersey Hospitality Association, Claire Bosq, has written to States Members asking them to support an amendment from the Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel that seeks a below inflation increase in the impot duty increase on alcohol. That letter, which was sent to all States Members this morning, is attached.
The Government Plan proposes to increase excise duty on wine and spirits by 5% from 1st January 2022 while freezing it on beer and cider and last week the Council of Ministers urged Members to reject the Panel’s amendment.
Apart from last year when duty was frozen due to the pandemic, the industry has faced damaging duty rises every year.
The Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel’s amendment took account of the devastating two years the hospitality industry has faced, providing a potential breathing space for the many businesses still facing uncertainty as they head into 2022.
