Channel Islands’ internet name extensions among the ‘safest’ in the world

The Channel Islands’ internet name extensions are among the ‘safest’ in the world, according to regular monitoring by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, overseer of the Internet names system.

ICANN’s Security Stability and Resilience team conduct regular monitoring of all domains such as COM, NET and ORG, as well as domains representing countries and territories (such as GG and JE) who participate in the world-wide Domain Abuse Activity Reporting System (DAAR).

In September 2021, ICANN reviewed almost 14 million domain names across 17 countries and territories.

Hardly any security threats were found in Guernsey’s .GG, whilst none at all were found in Jersey’s .JE

Taking the size of the zones is taken into account (i.e., the number of domains registered), in October 2021, on average a mere one-hundredth of a percentage point (0.01%) of .GG addresses were found by reputation feed reporters as associated with security threats and 0.00% of .JE names.

This contrasts very positively when compared with other domains.

There were twice as many, on average, in other country-codes, and three times as many in the so-called  generic top-level domains, such as .COM and .NET.

Nigel Roberts, director of the GG and JE registries, himself until recently a director at the California-based international organisation said today: “Combating internet security threats is an increasing responsibility for everyone in industry. As the Channel Islands are a small registry we are fortunate that we are able to pay very close attention to keeping our zone free of bad actors but it does requires constant attention”.
