The winners of the Jersey Institute of Directors (IoD) 2021 Director of the Year Awards, have been announced at a sell-out black tie dinner at the Royal Yacht on Friday September 17th.

The event was supported by gold sponsor, Appleby, and silver sponsors, Quilter Cheviot and Jersey Post, and hosted by impressionist and comedian, Rory Bremner.

The awards celebrate strong leadership and recognise excellence across the private, public and third sectors of Jersey’s community. An expanded ten categories were opened to nominations for the inspirational individuals who have led their organisations through this unprecedented and challenging year.

The Chief Minister, Senator John Le Fondré, the Bailiff, Timothy Le Cocq, and Lieutenant-Governor, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton, attended the Awards dinner, which took sustainability as its theme. The 240 guests enjoyed a drinks reception where they were able to view a selection of pieces from the Glen Perotte Exhibition, ‘A Year in Vision’, which featured portraits of well-known Islanders reflecting on 2020.

James Gaudin, Managing Partner of Gold sponsor, Appleby, said: “Without question, this has been one of the most challenging periods in which to lead a business.  The calibre of nominees and winners each year for these awards is always impressive and this year is no exception, but perhaps all the more remarkable in the context of leading through a pandemic  Appleby would like to congratulate all of the incredibly worthy category winners for the 2021 Awards.”

In further recognition of excellence in challenging times, Chair of the IoD Jersey, Lisa Springate, also presented three special Chair’s awards this year, to: Tony Moretta, CEO, Digital Jersey, Simon Soar, CEO, Jersey Hospitality Association, and Graeme Smith, CEO, Jersey Business.

Lisa Springate (shown in the main picture), Chair of IoD Jersey, said: “The Chair usually only presents one discretionary award, but the last eighteen months have seen unprecedented challenges. All three of our recipients have demonstrated real leadership, helping to navigate their organisations and communities through the most difficult trading conditions in living memory. They have inspired and led from the top, displaying the values, vision, and determination the IoD holds so highly.”

Phil Male, winner of Non-executive Director of the Year, said: “Clearly, I’m delighted to receive this fantastic award, because I think it recognises just how much everyone at JT has pulled together through the last eighteen months, which has seen us keep the island connected through Covid, be recognised as having the world’s fastest broadband network, launch a critical Sustainability Strategy and complete the largest corporate transaction in the digital sector that the island’s ever seen.

“There is no way that could all have been achieved unless it was preceded by many years of careful planning, hard work and talent, and that is exactly what I have seen throughout my colleagues in the JT Group. Thank you to the IoD and Club NED, on their behalf, for this fitting recognition of their achievements.”
