The Butterfield Challenge Trophy, one of the largest golfing competitions in the UK open to all handicap golfers this year, returned to the Royal Guernsey Golf Club (RGGC) on 24 April.

Making the most of the island’s low-risk Covid-19 status, the event attracted 320 players to the L’Ancresse golf course to compete in the Open Foursomes Stableford tournament. The first Butterfield Challenge Trophy took place in 2019, however the competition was postponed in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Roy Bushby, RGGC’s Club Manager, said: “We are incredibly thankful for Butterfield’s continued support. It has been all the more special that we have been able to compete this year and be one of the only tournaments of this size to go ahead in the UK”.

Ed Jones, Head of Lending, Channel Islands at Butterfield Bank said: “We’re very proud to sponsor the RGGC’s annual competition and to see the golfers coming together to enjoy healthy competition with each other.

“The event couldn’t happen last year so it’s great to see it return with no restrictions. It certainly shows the calibre of sporting talent that the island has to offer and a strengthened community feel after the tough year we’ve all had. It’s wonderful to see sporting events return and we look forward to many more in future”.

The winners of the competition were Nick Green and Barry Hince, with a fantastic score of 38 in very testing conditions.
