Guernsey’s unemployment falls 26% in March

The total number of people unemployed in Guernsey fell to 742 at the end of March 2021, as Guernsey moved out of lockdown.

This was a reduction of 258 from February 2021.

There was a sharp decrease in the number of new claims for employment and income related benefits from 614 in February to just 79 in March.

The number of job adverts promoted by the Job Centre was 466, which is the highest number of jobs ever advertised by the Job Centre in one month.

A number of training schemes, placements and courses were run through the Job Centre to support people into employment. At the end of March there were 23 people on training schemes such as Work to Benefit, Kickstart and placements with the third sector.  Short courses were also completed by 131 people during the first quarter of 2021.

These figures are a snapshot taken on the first Saturday following the end of March, when the Bailiwick was in Stage 3 of its exit from lockdown framework.

Deputy Peter Roffey, President of the Committee for Employment & Social Security, said: “Given our exit from lockdown during March, it was always going to be a matter of time before unemployment fell, but it is good to see nonetheless.

“It’s also encouraging to see many people taking part in schemes, placements and courses to boost their chances of gaining employment. This serves as a reminder that it is not always straight forward for people to find a job, and highlights the hard work of Job Centre staff to support members of our community into employment.”
