Guernsey’s Chamber warns: ‘Town is at risk’

Guernsey’s Chamber of Commerce has issued a stark warning that St Peter Port’s retail sector is facing its greatest challenges ever.

It’s inviting retail consultant David Elliott, who is now heading up plans to revitalise Jersey’s shopping centre in St Helier, to share his ideas.

While Chamber says it is actively involved in trying to ensure that town remains a vibrant and successful place in which to work, eat, shop and generally enjoy spending time, it is concerned the growing impact of issues including online sales is threatening that work.

It said: “With the Vision project in political sights and Town retail under threat more seriously than perhaps ever in the past, we are keen to help find a way through the challenges.  Whilst the retail sector is a major part of any scheme or support, the ability to stroll through town, in a lunch break from work or to meet friends for coffee, supper or shopping, is a fundamental part of island life. With online shopping and other factors affecting turnover in town, Chamber is liaising with businesses and States sectors to prepare St Peter Port for the way ahead.”

David will be the speaker at Chamber’s March lunch on Monday 19 March at the OGH.
