Event 12 Feb: How should Guernsey’s economic success be measured? Going beyond GDP

Guernsey’s IoD February breakfast will be delivered as a webinar and will focus on how Guernsey’s economic success should be measured.

GDP as a primary economic measure is now over eighty years old – and the world has changed beyond all recognition during this period.  Is GDP therefore still fit for purpose and, if not, what should be used to replace it?

The webinar will explore what we mean by economic success, the role that GDP plays in this, and the potential for broader measures of economic success to help us balance our economic priorities, our social goals, and the constraints imposed on us by the natural environment we live in.

Speaker Chris Brock from Critical Economics will not only present the arguments for and against GDP, but will also discuss what other measures could be used in its place. He will make particular reference to Guernsey and will highlight what other smaller communities are doing to measure economic success – and what we can learn from this.

Chris has operated at the highest level of island government in strategic planning, economics, tourism & hospitality, and utility services. He is attributed to the origination and subsequent adoption of many successful and practicable initiatives covering economic strategy, land use planning, population management, tourism development and statistical analysis.

The IoD February Breakfast is on 12th February 2021 at 10am and is supported by Butterfield.  You can book here.

  • 10.10am – Speaker Chris Brock from Critical Economics
