16-22 Nov: Road Safety Week

Road Safety Week has launched once again in Guernsey as part of the national initiative to promote the importance of safe behaviour on island roads.

Running from 16th – 22nd November, this is the UK’s biggest road safety event, which is coordinated annually by the road safety charity Brake. The aim of the week is to inspire schools, organisations and communities to take action on road safety and promote life-saving messages during the week and beyond.

Historically the States of Guernsey has used this event as an opportunity to boost road safety awareness and engage with the community about how we can all make safe choices when on the road – and this year is no different!

The theme this year is ‘No Need to Speed’. In keeping with this theme, Bailiwick Law Enforcement will be carrying out community engagement initiatives and, together with Traffic & Highway Services, will be sharing information on their social media platforms to spread the message that speed matters.

Inspector Tom Marshall, Roads Policing Unit, said: “Road safety is of paramount importance and this dedicated week is an excellent opportunity for us to highlight road safety issues, and to engage with members of the community of all ages.  In preparation for this week, we have been visiting schools to give some lessons on how to be safe on the roads and we have also liaised with Target who have provided some tyre safety leaflets.

“Over the course of this week our vehicle examiners will be going out with uniformed staff to conduct roadside checks on various vehicles, and our officers will, as always, be on the lookout for road safety offences, such as the use of a mobile phone while driving, traveling without a seat belt, or exceeding the speed limit”.
