Local insurance broker, Rossborough, is reminding all Islanders who plan to drive on the continent from January next year to apply for a Green Card via their motor insurer.
01 January 2021 marks the end of the transition period for the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union (EU) and Guernsey motorists travelling to Europe from next year need to be prepared. Anyone taking a vehicle to a European Economic Area (EEA) country on holiday and those driving across the Northern Ireland/Republic of Ireland border are affected, along with freight and commercial companies travelling through the EU.
James Anderson, Group Managing Director of Rossborough Insurance, said, ‘All Islanders will need to be in possession of a physical Green Card and to secure one in advance of travel. The Card itself is an international certificate of insurance which guarantees drivers have third-party motor cover for travelling in Europe and those without one may be in breach of the law.’
The Card is for any motor vehicle with all forms of motor insurance – including private, commercial, motor trade and motor fleet policies. It is required to cover the registration number of the individual vehicle, so a Green Card will be needed to cover each when being driven in the EEA.
Drivers with a Guernsey driving licence travelling to certain countries in the EU and EEA may also need to obtain an IDP (International Driving Permit). For clarification, Islanders can get more information here.
Drivers with a Jersey driving licence can get more information here.
Rossborough customers should apply for a Green Card at least 14 days before travel through
the green button on their website.
