New education programmes are launched in Guernsey to plug the island’s skills gap

Bright Futures, a Guernsey-based charity, has launched a series of courses to educate those wanting to work but in need of additional skills to do so.

The three programmes will run from September and are free to attend. They will cater for those leaving school and entering the world of work, individuals looking to return to work and aspiring entrepreneurs.

The programmes will be the Young Professionals Programme – preparing young people for the world of work; the Returners Programme – preparing and supporting people wanting to return to work following a period of absence; and the Bright Minds Programme – supporting aspiring entrepreneurs.

Susie Crowder, Bright Futures Director, says: “We have tailored the programmes to meet the needs we currently have in our economy. Upskilling and reskilling local people in these areas should go some way in assisting them to (re)enter the world of work, either as an employee, a contractor or as an entrepreneur.

“Bright Futures is committed to supporting local people to realise their full potential and remain economically and socially active. By equipping people with the skills and guidance to fulfil their own career ambitions and maximise their own value proposition, we are helping to support the business community and economy.”

The sessions are all being hosted at the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce business centre.  Chamber President Barrie Baxter says, “We are delighted to be partnering with Bright Futures and host the educational programmes. Filling the skills gaps in our economy can only be good for businesses locally and, of course, one of the Chamber’s aims is to see businesses flourish.  I believe Chamber should be accessible for all so the centre is the perfect place for these programmes to be hosted.”

Bright Futures was launched last year to ensure people have access to learning at any stage of their lives, and are better able to support the island’s skills gap and contribute positively to the economy.

The programmes are free and open to all; anyone wishing to apply can do so through www.brightfutures.org.gg.
