Butterfield celebrates one-year anniversary in Jersey

As Butterfield celebrates the first anniversary of doing business in Jersey, it reflects on its achievements following the acquisition of Deutsche Bank’s local banking and custody business.

During its first year, the Bank has assimilated into the local community by supporting various initiatives that promote the betterment of the natural environment, education, sport and the arts.

Noel McLaughlin, Managing Director at Butterfield Bank (Jersey) Limited, said: “With a long established community presence in Guernsey, we felt it was important to foster similar relationships in Jersey for it to really feel like home. At Butterfield, we’re passionate about so many local initiatives and being able to support them has been instrumental in us getting to know our newest jurisdiction, while making a positive impact in the community.

At the Group level—and locally in Jersey—Butterfield is committed to supporting organisations and initiatives that focus on protecting and improving island environments. To complement this, Butterfield partnered with and signed up as a Plastic Free Jersey business. The Bank pledged to undertake three actions which aim to reduce its consumption of single-use plastic. It also sponsored Plastic Free Jersey’s Design Sprint and in February sent two local students to the London Hackathon where they invented solutions to the global plastic problem. Butterfield is also working closely with Jersey Marine Conservation to educate Islanders of all ages about the importance of local marine creatures, their habitats and their decline, through an interactive Touch Tank, as part of the Butterfield Marine Watch initiative.

Butterfield proudly supports the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust with its work in saving the world’s most threatened species.  Sponsorship of the recent Durrell Challenge and its Really Wild Day allows the charity to raise funds to help restore and conserve species not only in Jersey, but also around the world. Understanding the island’s integral sport culture, the Bank partnered with the Jersey Reds Rugby Club sponsoring the team’s shorts for the 2018/2019 season. The Butterfield shorts were seen live on Sky TV in January as the Jersey Reds played London Irish. Butterfield also participates in the island’s vibrant music scene, as a sponsor of the long-standing Jersey Eisteddfod.

Noel added: “We’ve had a very successful first year on the Island. We started with just three employees; we’re now a strong team of 60. Butterfield is proud to invest in the well-being of the communities in which it operates and we hope to continue making a difference in Jersey for many years to come.”
