Politician quits Guernsey’s Economic Development Committee

Deputy Jennifer Merrett has resigned from the Committee for Economic Development ahead of a States debate to find a new member of the committee.

She says it’ll give someone with the same ‘energy and enthusiasm’ the opportunity to drive forward the agenda.

Her departure follows the resignation of Deputy Peter Ferbrache last November over a perceived conflict of interest. He was replaced by Deputy Charles Parkinson. That victory, in turn, led to Deputy Jan Kuttelwascher quitting the committee.

Deputy Merrett said: “Having given the matter careful consideration, I have decided to step down from my role as a member of the Committee for Economic Development. This will give an opportunity for someone with the same energy and enthusiasm to join the Committee to continue to build on the foundations laid and progress the Committee’s mandate.”

She says she’s stepping down before the January debate in order to allow the States the chance to fill both vacancies at the same time.

She said: “I believe I have contributed usefully across the mandate of Economic Development during my time on the Committee, and am grateful to have had the opportunity to do so. I trust the Committee will continue to pursue a range of important priorities, including active support for Guernsey’s vital tourism and retail sectors, and I wish my successor the very best for their role.”

The Committee for Economic Development’s action plan forms the centrepiece of its 2018 activity. Among its recommendations, that Aurigny is guaranteed a monopoly on the Guernsey to Gatwick route for the next five years.
