Hotels, restaurants and cafes in Guernsey say they are being forced to close at peak times during the summer months because of staff shortages.
In a sentiment echoed in Jersey, they believe it is the worst year yet for a lack of staff and they believe people from the EU no longer want to come to Guernsey due to fears over Brexit and strengthening economies in other countries.
Businesses in the industry want the system to be simplified to make it easier and quicker for people from outside Europe to come and work.
However, Guernsey’s government has said the recruitment issues are happening on a wider scale, not just on island.
The States say the current Population Management Law seeks to support the tourism and hospitality sector through measures such as:
- The reintroduction of the 9 month on, 3 month off permits
- The removal of the 5-year cap on residence for people living and working in hotel accommodation
The Home Affairs department say they will continue to work with the Population Employment Advisory Panel to develop polices relating to companies looking for staff.
