A 12-week project to replace the lights in the tunnel in St Helier starts tonight (Monday).
It means, from 7pm to 6am, each Sunday to Thursday night it will be completely closed, but will stay open on Friday and Saturday nights.
There’ll also be no pedestrian access during the closure. A diversion route through Snow Hill car park will be signed for those on-foot.
The Department for Infrastructure work will replace the existing lighting system which is more than 20 years old.
They say: “The likelihood of total system failure is high and represents a risk to public safety. DfI has therefore taken the decision to replace the existing lighting system and update the control system and all the associated cabling.”
Once finished, the department says it should last at least another 20 years and will significantly improve the lighting level for both drivers and pedestrians and be able to constantly moderate the lighting to the optimum level within the tunnel, based on the ambient lighting outside the tunnel.
