Watch: Guernsey’s first public electric car charging stations now live

Guernsey’s first public electric car charging stations have gone live, and there could be more across the island if demand is there.

They’re based along the southern wall of the North Beach car park in the three-hour parking spaces area, and will cost £1.50 an hour to use.

Payment is via a free-to-download mobile phone app called EOApp.

Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez, of the Committee for the Environment and Infrastructure, said: “The Integrated Transport Strategy encourages and supports the switch to electric vehicles, to help reduce the negative impact of road use on the environment. This initiative provides electric vehicle charging stations for the first time in a public car park in Guernsey – a facility that will enable more people to use electric vehicles more easily.”

“The Pay As You Go system means that locals and visitors alike will be able to charge their vehicle at North Beach without needing a subscription. We will monitor the use of the charging stations with a view to expanding the initiative into other locations if demand is sufficient.”

To avoid cars being left to charge for long periods, the usual 3-hour parking space rules apply from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday.

The charging stations have been installed by energy storage & charge point provider Green Acorn.

Managing Director Keith Hounsell said: “We are pleased to have installed the first publicly available charging stations in Guernsey and look forward to seeing the growth of electric vehicle usage in the coming years.”
