Butterfield donates over 1000 meals a week to Channel Islands’ most vulnerable

Butterfield is working with local organisations across Jersey and Guernsey to support the community throughout lockdown. The Bank’s donations are enabling the charities to continue their selfless work, assisting vulnerable members of the community and those who have been significantly affected by the pandemic.

In Guernsey, Butterfield has partnered with local charity, Les Cotils, to aid in the provision of meals to both frontline emergency services employees and Guernsey families-in-need. With Butterfield’s funding, Les Cotils is coordinating the cooking and delivery of 45 meals a night to frontline services for the next two months. Additionally, in collaboration with Bright Beginnings Children’s Centre and with assistance from Help a Guernsey Child, up to 50 families will receive meal support, with four meals delivered to families-in-need each week for the next two months.

Fiona Naftel, Managing Director of Les Cotils explained: “We have a large kitchen, so our Chefs can cook while maintaining a safe distance from each other. Our team of volunteers set out each night to deliver the meals to families’ doorsteps in an insulated bag which keeps the food hot, so no contact is needed with the family. This minimises the risk of infection and also protects the family’s privacy.”

“Les Cotils is a charity itself and since lockdown we have been unable to continue caring for the community in our usual way. We are so thankful for Butterfield’s generous support, which has enabled us to keep the charity’s vision alive to give back to the local community where we can.”

Butterfield has also donated to Safer, to assist the charity in delivering the essential services it offers to victims of domestic abuse and their families for the next three months.

Richard Saunders, Butterfield’s Managing Director, Channel Islands, said: “We are incredibly proud to be part of a community that has shown such solidarity in this challenging time and, being in a position to help, we wanted to play our part.”

In Jersey, the Bank is helping Caring Cooks. The charity provides a support service to vulnerable families experiencing hardship, allowing them to eat well and eat together, without the need to worry about cooking or purchasing ingredients. Caring Cooks is currently providing almost 200 meals per day, and Butterfield has committed to cover the cost of half the meals provided throughout May.

Noel McLaughlin, Managing Director of Butterfield Bank Jersey commented, “These charities offer an invaluable service to our community; but they too, have been impacted financially by the lockdown. It is an honour to be able to help them continue their indispensable work.”
