Four Channel Islanders named in New Year’s Honours List

Four Channel Islanders have been named in this year’s New Year’s Honours List.

Bomb disposal officer Stuart Elliot from Jersey, and Guernsey’s Anne Diamond who works in the deaf community, each receive the British Empire Medal (BEM).

Philip Gower is made an OBE for his services to vulnerable children and young people in Jersey.

And Derek Webb from Guernsey is made an MBE for his services to table tennis.

Deputy Gavin St Pier in Guernsey and Senator Philip Ozouf in Jersey issued public congratulations to each islands’ respective recipients on behalf of the governments and the community.

Nominations for Honours are made, in the Channel Islands, through Government House in Jersey and Guernsey. Details of how to nominate can be found here in Jersey and here in Guernsey.

The New Year Honours in numbers:

  • Across the British Isles, 1,123 people received an award
  • Among them, 981 candidates have been selected at BEM, MBE and OBE level: 318 at BEM, 452 at MBE and 211 at OBE
  • 70% of the recipients are people who have undertaken outstanding work in their communities either in a voluntary or paid capacity
  • 551 women are recognised, representing 49% of the total, while 9.2% of the successful candidates come from a BAME background
