The Jersey Institute of Law is holding a mini symposium, titled Women In Law, on Friday 6 March to celebrate the success of women working in the local law and justice profession.

The event is being held to celebrate International Women’s Day which, this year, is Sunday 8 March. International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women while also marking a call to action for accelerating gender equality.

Murielle Nicolas, Director of Administration at the Institute of Law said: “It’s hard to believe that 100 years ago, women were barred from working in law. They weren’t even allowed to study the profession. We are delighted to have a such a prestigious panel of professional women who have achieved so much success in their chosen legal professions.”

The four guest speakers at the event are:

  • Advocate Claire Davies, a lecturer at the Institute of Law and who runs her own law firm specialising in all family law;
  • Judge Bridget Shaw, who became the island’s first female magistrate in 2013;
  • Karen Houston, the Acting Detective Sergeant at the Economic Crime & Confiscation

    Unit and;

  • Dr Sasha Holden, an experienced academic and who teaches human rights law at the

    Institute of Law.

    The event is free to attend and will take place at the Institute of Law which is situated on the top floor of the Turner Building, at Highlands College. Free tickets are available via the Institute’s website, https://www.lawinstitute.ac.je
