The Guernsey Institute of Directors 2023 Leadership Shadowing programme has launched this week with presentations to local Sixth Form students.
The Institute of Directors (IoD) Leadership Shadowing initiative places lower sixth-form students with senior business leaders for a two to three-day placement. The scheme gives students the unique opportunity to observe first-hand how those at the top of organisations motivate, advise and support their colleagues.
Later in the year, the students present their observations and learnings to a panel of local business leaders who select a shortlist of 10 students.
The top 10 students will re-perform their presentations at a high-profile finals evening at KPMG in front of the panel and an audience of their peers, teachers, business leaders and parents. The winner will take home the Martyn Mann trophy.
Wendy Dorey, Chair of the IoD Guernsey explained: “The IoD Leadership Shadowing programme has helped hundreds of local students over the years, and we are thrilled to continue the programme again this year.
“The scheme is very different to traditional work experience. It provides students with a unique opportunity to observe and understand the role of leadership within a business setting. The experience broadens their concept of leadership and gives them useful insights ahead of entering the workplace.”
The IoD scheme has been supported for many years by Linda Johnson of KPMG and Rob Jones of Aztech Soccer. Source Recruitment coordinates the student placements by matching students to leaders. Ahead of the student’s presentation, Orchard PR provides presentation skills training. All the sponsors are involved in judging and spend significant time and input contributing to the scheme’s success.
KPMG Partner Linda Johnson said: “Supporting the next generation is incredibly important to KPMG, and we’re proud to have supported the IoD Leadership Shadowing Scheme for so many years.
“Watching the students present their insights always impresses; it’s clear they gain a lot from the experience, and we urge business leaders to take part and help kickstart the next generation’s leadership skills.”
Students are invited to apply to the IoD Leadership Shadowing programme here.
