20th October 2020 is Care Support Worker day.

A full day of events including: talks by Guernsey’s Health and Social Care (HSC) Heads of Services; an exhibition representing service areas and the care certificate programme; and the presentation of wards for care workers in each of the service areas has been planned.

Helena Avery, Lead for the Care Certificate said: “Our care support workers provide essential services. The celebrations planned for the day demonstrates the variety of roles carried out by staff on a daily basis. 2020 has been an extremely challenging year for all health and care workers in the Bailiwick.

“This awards ceremony is a true testament to the feelings of gratitude to healthcare assistants and unregistered staff who work tirelessly across all areas of HSC. Support workers are a vital part of the heath care team in providing vulnerable people with care, support and practical help”.

The winners of the awards for care workers in the following categories were voted for by staff, colleagues and patients:

  • Acute Services
  • Community Services
  • Learning Development and Mental Health Services
  • Allied Health Professionals
  • Midwifery & Children’s Services
  • Care Support Worker of the Year 2020

Care Support Workers Day highlights the wide variety of roles carried out by the unregistered staff on a daily basis, and would be a great advert for those thinking about a career in healthcare, which ever form that may take. There are no specific qualifications needed to be a support worker – beyond a positive attitude and willingness to learn, which are essential – but experience in the care sector is definitely advantageous.
