This week’s EDABL column features two Guernsey producers and EDABL members. Both will be participating in the next Seafront Sunday at the end of the month.
YES CHEFan’
The quest for a really awesome burger inspired local entrepreneur, Stefan de Laune, 36, to set up his business. Returning to the island in May 2016, he spotted a gap in the market for a street food burger stall. Weeks later with the paperwork in place he was set up in Market Square armed with a burger recipe, a second-hand barbeque and a bucketful of ambition.
“I’ve always had a massive love for barbequing – it’s absolutely my favourite way to cook. I knew if I could get the recipe, the produce and price right people would be keen. Guernsey offers up some amazing food in top-class restaurants but nothing like what I was planning so I just went for it,” said Stefan.
He didn’t give his brand too much thought; a clever nickname acquired because he spent so much time around the barbeque at social events seemed to stick, and CHEFAN was born.
“Getting the burger recipe nailed was one of the easiest parts of setting up the business – we’ve given it some minor tweaks over the last couple of years – but it basically remains the same and of course it’s totally focused around 100% Guernsey beef. We’ve built a great customer base, a strong brand and a quality product.”

LE HECHET FARM ICE-CREAM
Some of the greatest Guernsey small business success stories are those that have started and have remained in the family. Le Hechet Farm Ice Cream is one such success story with a history that started in the 1950s. Located in the hills of Castel, Le Hechet Farm is family owned and currently has 80 cows across 300 vergees. The cows produce 200 litres of milk per week from which their own branded Le Hechet Farm Ice Cream is made. Offering no less than 30 flavours, this hugely popular ice cream is supplied to local restaurants and hotels and are a regular sight at public events and fairs across Guernsey.
Taking full benefit of the enviable landscape in which Le Hechet Farm is located, owners Julian and Katherine Ogier not only continue to reinvest into Le Hechet Farm but are the first to admit that “we are so lucky that we can pick the fruit from our family’s orchards enabling us to make everything from apricot and peach to plum ice cream.”
Sisters Katherine and Rachel will be participating in all 2019 Eat Drink & Be Local Seafront Sundays and be found on the corner of North Esplanade and Crown Pier. Come and sample the very best locally made ice cream from locally grown and produced fruit and milk– or find Le Hechet Farm on Facebook.
CHEFAN and Le Hechet Farm are but two of the local Guernsey producers that islanders and visitors can experience and enjoy at Eat Drink & Be Local Seafront Sundays – the next one is on 28 July 2019 from 10am to 5pm.
