Memorial Service for Sapper Onions

A memorial service will be held on Friday 21 June to remember the only British soldier, Sapper George Onions, who died on active duty in Alderney. The Service will be held at 11am on Friday 21 June at the graveside in St Anne’s Church Cemetery.

Serving with the 259 Field Company of the Royal Engineers, the military engineer was helping to clear land mines laid on the island by the Germans during the Occupation. It is believed that the young man died on 21 June 1945, which rather poignantly was his 22nd birthday, while unloading a lorry carrying supposedly decommissioned mines and detonators, one of which accidentally exploded.

Born in Tunstall, Stoke on Trent, Sapper Onions is remembered with affection by the people of the island, not only for his service but for his engagement with the local community and a simple service is held annually to remember him.
