Marine Mission
On Sunday, 2nd February 2025, World Wetlands Day, over 20 exhibitors and speakers will come together for an evening focused on the importance of Jersey’s marine and coastal ecosystems.
Following the success of the 2024 event, the Marine Mission event returns, offering a unique opportunity for the public to hear from leading marine conservationists and environmentalists from the UK and the Channel Islands.
Taking place in the Rocco Suite at the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, this free event will feature exhibitions and a series of talks from 17:30 to 21:00.
This year’s programme includes insights from some of the most respected voices in marine conservation. Highlights include Andrew Mitchell, Chair of the Jersey Ramsar Advisory Group, reflecting on his year in the role and the importance of Jersey’s Ramsar -protected wetlands; Alex Purdie from the Alderney Wildlife Trust , sharing the pressures facing puffins and seabird colonies; and marine biologist Beccy Macdonald-Lofts , Seahorses of the UK, uncovering the hidden world of these enigmatic creatures – plus much more throughout the evening. The session will conclude with an open Q&A, giving attendees the opportunity to engage directly with speakers and conservation experts.
In addition to informative talks, there will be a welcome exhibition showcasing the work of conservation charities, research institutions, environmental educators, and government bodies – all dedicated to protecting and promoting Jersey’s extraordinary marine and coastal environment.
Organised by Jersey Marine Conservation , this event is part of a wider effort to educate and connect the community with these essential ecosystems – coinciding with the global observance of World Wetlands Day.
Kevin McIlwee MSc, Chairman of the Jersey Marine Conservation, said: “Jersey’s marine environment is one of our most valuable assets, yet many people remain unaware of the vital role our wetlands and coastal waters play.” He added: “This event is about bringing the community together – to learn, to engage, and to take action. By connecting people with leading experts and conservationists, we hope to inspire a greater appreciation for these extraordinary ecosystems and encourage meaningful steps toward their protection.”
Andrew Mitchell, Environmental Advisor and Chair of the Jersey Ramsar Advisory Group, said: “Our wetlands are essential to Jersey’s ecological balance, and their protection is key to sustaining the Island’s environmental health and biodiversity. These ecosystems act as natural flood defences, carbon stores, and vital breeding grounds for marine life.
“Jersey is a signatory to the Ramsar Convention that seeks to protect wetlands like ours, as priceless heritage for generations to come.”
