Lecture & Music inspired by Victor Hugo

The Victor Hugo In Guernsey Society presents a Lecture & Recital at St. James by Arnaud Bigaignon de Sullé.

Arnaud has attended many operas around the World and speaks regularly to public audiences about them. He was always filled with admiration for Victor Hugo. This will be the first occasion that he has spoken about Hugo’s influence on music and opera.

During his lecture, Arnaud will talk about the many and close links between Victor Hugo and music, and especially opera. His talk will be interspersed with performances by renowned international artists:

  • Diyu Sun – Piano
  • Julian Debreuil – Baritone
  • Iúnó Connolly – Soprano

GADOC will also be performing songs from Les Misérables.

The lecture will be made up of four chapters:

  • Hugo music lover and the importance of music in his life ;
  • Hugo’s relationship with many composers, most of them having written on his texts;
  • Hugo’s works that have inspired operas, the two most famous being, of course, Ernani and Rigoletto, by Giuseppe Verdi;
  • The musicality in Hugo’s novels, poems and letters.

Arnaud said: “Victor Hugo is a great man, a genius… and a musician!”

The evening will be in two parts with a Victor Hugo bookshop and a licensed bar open before and during the interval.
