Georgian culture week
Georgian Culture Week will be hosted in Guernsey from 4th October to 6th October 2024
Guernsey has a small number of resident Georgian nationals who are organising Georgian Culture Week at the beginning of October, with the aim of introducing Georgia’s rich artistic and cultural heritage to a local audience.
Georgia is an independent republic of 3.7m people bounded by the Black Sea, Russia, Turkey Armenia and Azerbaijan. It has a rich history in the arts, music, wine
and cuisine, which Georgian Culture Week aims to showcase.
The organisers are grateful to Guernsey Arts Commission, William Maguire, Obsidian and Tussie Mussie Flowers for sponsoring the event which allows 6 Georgian artists to visit Guernsey for this event.
The schedule begins on 4th October with an evening masterclass at Les Cotils to showcase the ancient art of enamel jewellery making.
On 5 th October, Les Cotils will host a Georgian art and jewellery exhibition featuring the work of celebrated Georgian artist Kakha Khinvelli, open from 11am to 5pm.
The final event is an evening of Georgian music and cuisine, to be held at Les Cotils on 6 th October, which features the music of Nina Bashruli, known for her powerful voice and emotional performance, complemented with traditional Georgian dishes, and with Georgian wine available. Tickets are available at £55 each.
Jelena Kovalevska, the event co-ordinator, said: “Georgian Culture Week is not just a celebration of art and music; it is a celebration of cultural heritage and the power of cultural exchange. By bringing these talented artists to Guernsey, the organisers aim to build bridges of understanding and appreciation between our communities. This event underscores the importance of preserving and promoting cultural diversity in an increasingly interconnected world.”
