Illuminate at Sausmarez Manor will launch in Guernsey this month with the aim of providing a seasonal alternative to traditional Christmas activities.
A spectacular light display will transform the manor’s grounds into a twinkling, enchanted forest. There will be hot food and drinks, crafts, local artwork and a focus on promoting good mental health.
‘Christmas can be a hard time of year if you have suffered bereavement, issues at work, money or health problems. Sad Christmas songs and nostalgia about Christmases past can make for an emotionally uncomfortable time,’ said Angela McCafferty, director of On The Rock Events Limited.
‘I’ve had to deal with three family bereavements and some personal difficulties over the past few years, and there is something about the festive period that seems to enhance all these feelings. I wanted to create an event that celebrates what’s lovely and uplifting about this time of year – sparkling lights, great food and drink and good times with friends, for example – but without the usual Christmas music (on repeat), queues for Santa’s Grotto, or the need to be reminded of how many shopping days you have left.’
The event, which is inspired by forest light displays in Scotland and coloured displays at large UK festivals, will see guests follow an illuminated trail that winds its way through the venue’s sub-tropical gardens. A selection of food and drink will be on offer, there’ll be feel-good music playing, and on display will be works by artists inspired by promoting creativity as a way to combat and maintain good mental health. There’ll also be art activities for kids and the chance to buy some illuminated accessories to wear during the event.
Carpark donations, commissions from sold artwork and a percentage of event profits will be split between charities who assist in mental health causes in Guernsey.
‘I want this to be a really inclusive event and a worthwhile addition to the winter calendar of events on the island. The gardens will look stunning, it will be a totally immersive experience, and even though children might not understand the mental health aspect, there’ll be plenty for them to enjoy,’ said Angela.
‘It’s the perfect way to start the winter season and make cherished memories with family and friends. I hope it will make people smile and raise funds to assist with mental health.’
Illuminate at Sausmarez Manor will run from 28 – 30 November, from 5 – 9pm. It’s recommended that tickets be purchased in advance through Eventbrite. For more information contact [email protected].
