SUMMARY:Jersey’s first ever Grief Disco
DESCRIPTION:Jersey Hospice Care’s Community Bereavement Service is hosting the Island’s first ever Grief Disco – a space to honour and celebrate a loved one who has died.\nGrief Disco is a community experience that creates a safe, compassionate space for people to process grief through dance music, movement, and connection. It’s not therapy, but it can be deeply therapeutic.\nAt its heart, Grief Disco is built on a simple but powerful idea: that grief and joy can coexist and that moments of lightness can support healing – not take away from loss.\nWe know that many people who are navigating grief can feel isolated or unsure where they ‘fit’ after loss, they may struggle to access or engage with traditional support, or they might just need spaces that feel human, informal, and accessible.\nGrief Disco aims to provide this space by offering a safe, inclusive environment where there’s no pressure to talk or participate in any particular way, and there are opportunities for connection and community – reducing isolation. It’s a gentle invitation back into the body through music and movement, and a space where people can feel, remember, and even smile – without guilt.\nIt was founded by Georgina Jones and Leah Siân Davies in Cardiff, Wales, in 2024, following their own personal losses, and how they both found dance and music helped them with their grief.\nGeorgina said: “People can dance, they can chat, they can sit. There aren’t many spaces to process grief that isn’t the usual therapy or group setting. Talking about grief is one thing, but grief is a feeling and an energy – we want to get people to connect through their grief, joy, and sadness.”\nGrief Disco has already been welcomed in a number of settings across the UK, including hospices and community venues, with feedback from attendees describing feeling, “lighter, seen, connected, held, and less alone”.\nMary Le Hegarat, Lead Counsellor, Community Bereavement Service, said “After hearing about Georgina’s experience and how movement and dance music has helped her process her grief, I knew that I wanted to bring the concept to Jersey. As someone who supports people through grief and loss, I understand how varied our expressions of grief can be – and this can be a meaningful way for people to work through their loss while feeling part of a supportive community.”\nFiona Wylie, Chief Executive at Our House of Champions, the venue hosting our Grief Disco, said: “Our House of Champions was created to be more than just a premium space; it was created to be a place where Jersey’s community can come together, support one another, and feel a true sense of belonging. Hosting Jersey Hospice Care’s first Grief Disco is a good opportunity to open our house and our hearts to one another at such an important and sad time.”\n
