SUMMARY:The Saturday Art School pop up exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Young artists will showcase their creativity, experimentation and collaboration in a new pop-up exhibition opening this weekend at ArtHouse Jersey’s HQ at Greve de Lecq Barracks.\nThe Saturday Art School Pop Up Exhibition opens on Saturday 23 May and runs until Sunday 31 May 2026, featuring mixed-media artworks created by students aged 12 to 18 during ArtHouse Jersey’s Saturday Art School workshops.\nBringing together work made between September 2025 and May 2026, the exhibition includes drawing, painting, sculpture, papermaking, feltmaking, digital animation and sculptural lantern-making, alongside recent experiments with gouache painting and colour mixing in preparation for a community mural project.\nThe Saturday Art School workshops are designed to introduce young people to a wide range of creative techniques, materials and approaches through an experimental mixed-media programme. The sessions encourage participants to develop new skills, build confidence in their own ideas and grow as independent creative thinkers while exploring their own artistic journeys.\nRelaxed and sociable in nature, the workshops also provide opportunities for young people from different schools and backgrounds to come together, make new friends and form a creative community. Activities include both individual and collaborative projects, encouraging participants to experiment with different ways of working and creating.\nThe exhibition offers visitors a glimpse into the creative journeys of young Islanders who have spent the past year exploring new materials, techniques and ideas while building confidence and friendships through art.\nWork on display has been developed through workshops led by artist educators Margarida Lourenco Oliver, Nicole Sheppard, Bethan Watkins, Karen Le Roy Harris, Susanne Kudielka, Scott Evans and Lisa Troy.\nEducation Officer for ArtHouse Jersey, Anna Shipley, said: “Saturday Art School is about giving young people the freedom and encouragement to experiment creatively, develop new skills and build confidence in their own ideas. What’s so lovely about this exhibition is seeing the individuality of each participant shine through while also celebrating the sense of community that has grown between them over an eight month period. The work is playful, thoughtful, ambitious and full of personality.”\nParticipants themselves described the programme as both creatively inspiring and socially rewarding. One student said: “I really enjoy the social aspect of Saturday Art School.” Another added: “Making sculptural lanterns was intriguing because I’ve never attempted anything like that before. It taught me new skills.”\n\nImage credit: Sophie Darwin Photography\n
