SUMMARY:The InterTidal: A unique new running event for Jersey
DESCRIPTION:A brand new running event has been launched in Jersey which takes place through an area usually covered by the Island’s record tides.\nSet along the Jersey’s south-east coast, The Intertidal takes place on August 15 almost entirely within the intertidal zone, with runners required to navigate between fixed checkpoints at landmarks across terrain that is only accessible at exceptionally low tides.\nLocal runners Mick Siouville, Sam Wilkes and Ronnie Isherwood soft-launched the race just under a month ago and have already seen substantial sign-ups from Jersey and the UK, showing the appeal for a challenge that combines running with nature, scenery and a break from the normal.\nThe approximately 16 mile route begins at the slipway next to Rhona’s Café in Gorey and finishes at St Aubin’s Yacht Club via six coastal landmarks – Seymour Tower, Icho Tower, Green Island, Havre des Pas, Elizabeth Castle and St Aubin’s Fort.\nRather than strictly following a marked course, participants must choose carefully their own path between checkpoints, with underfoot conditions changing as the tide recedes and then begins to return.\nMick said: “There’s a strong appetite for events that feel like an adventure but remain accessible. This is about giving runners that experience in a controlled and well-supported environment.”\nSam added: “The concept was designed to introduce a new type of challenge to the local and visiting running community which showcases Jersey at its finest yet still delivering a different experience.”\nRonnie continued: “The tide dictates everything. It determines when the race can start, how long runners have, and which routes are viable. It creates a completely different dynamic to a traditional trail event.”\nThe founders have confirmed that entry numbers for the first edition will be limited to ensure safety and operational control, with potential plans to expand the event in future years.\nThe Intertidal is expected to attract off-island participants as interest grows, positioning Jersey as a potential destination for innovative endurance events that make use of its coastal geography and tidal range.\n
