SUMMARY:Memory, Erasure & Appearance – Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:A new exhibition exploring the evolution and future of photography will open at Private & Public Gallery in St Helier this May.\nMemory, Erasure & Appearance brings together contemporary works by French artist Isabelle Delvallée alongside a selection of photographs by 20th century surrealist Claude Cahun. The exhibition also marks 200 years since the creation of the first permanent photograph in 1826, offering an opportunity to reflect on photography’s development from early experimental processes to today’s digital image culture.\nIsabelle’s work revisits early photographic techniques, including gum bichromate printing, to create layered and evolving images that explore themes of memory, transformation and perception. Rather than presenting fixed representations, the works emphasise the instability of the image, where forms emerge, dissolve and shift over time.\nThe exhibition includes a section displayed in darkness, where images become visible only under ultraviolet light, encouraging visitors to engage more closely with the process of image formation and disappearance.\nAlongside Isabelle’s work, the exhibition features photographs by Claude Cahun, who lived in Jersey from 1937. These works have been selected for their technical approach to image-making and their exploration of transformation through photographic processes.\nTogether, the exhibition considers how photography shapes memory and identity, while also raising questions about authenticity and the role of images in an age of digital manipulation and artificial intelligence.\nThe exhibition runs from 15 May to 5 June 2026 at Private & Public Gallery, Sommerville House, Phillips Street, St Helier. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 12pm to 6pm, with a preview evening on Friday 15 May from 5pm to 8pm.\n
