SUMMARY:Grow Green Miles
DESCRIPTION:Guernsey charity Grow is inviting the island’s community to lace up their walking shoes, step outside, and make a difference – one mile at a time.\nThe event, planned for May 1 will launch ‘Grow Green Miles’, a new annual fundraising initiative encouraging individuals, families, businesses and local groups to walk at least one mile a day throughout the month.\n“It’s a simple, enjoyable way to keep fit, connect with others, and support a cause that truly matters,” said Grow’s Training and Development Manager, Roscoe Cloarec.\nThe charity, which trains adults with learning disabilities or difficulties, is partnering with the Guernsey Press to help promote the event and build momentum ahead of the launch. Editor James Falla said: “We’re proud to support Grow Green Miles and help share stories from across the island as people come together for such a positive community initiative. It’s a fantastic way to celebrate wellbeing, local connection and the important work Grow does.”\nMr Cloarec said: “At Grow, we are passionate about health and wellbeing – for our Crew, our supporters, and our wider community. By encouraging regular exercise, fresh air and mindful movement, Grow Green Miles promotes physical and mental wellbeing while raising vital funds for our work.”\nMandy Mackelworth, Grow’s general manager has announced an exciting partnership with the Nature Commission. “Commission teams will be leading a series of ‘look out’ walks which will add to the interest. Their mission – to connect the community with nature fits perfectly with the spirit of Grow Green Miles’ she said ‘Everyone taking part will be invited to spot unusual plants, birds and wildlife that make our island so special.”\nJessi Jennings, CEO of The Nature Commission said: “The Nature Commission is delighted to be part of the Grow Green Miles initiative – encouraging the community of Guernsey to spend time outside in nature while also spotting wildlife is a brilliant way to build understanding of the importance of our natural environment and show that everyone can take part in looking after it. We are excited to be providing a few guided walks to highlight some of our species, so look out for those!”\nHow it works\nThroughout May, participants are encouraged to walk a minimum of one mile each day taking different routes around the island, from coastal paths to hidden lanes.\nWith over 30 walks to choose from, there’s something for everyone. From the south coast cliff paths and the green lanes of St Martin to rarely visited corners of L’Ancresse Common, participants can explore some of Guernsey’s loveliest places at their own pace. Accessible walks will be clearly highlighted, and of\ncourse walkers are always welcome to choose their own favourite route.\nThe first walk will be from Grow, followed by a celebratory BBQ to welcome participants back.\nThe fund-raising scheme concludes on Sunday 31 May with a final walk and a summer craft market at Grow – a chance to reflect, connect and celebrate achievements.\nWhy Grow Green Miles matters\nGrow supports adults with learning disabilities to build confidence, independence and life skills through meaningful work, training and mentoring. The charity’s work fosters inclusion, purpose and a genuine sense of belonging within the community.\nGet walking, get talking\nFriends of Grow, known as FrOGs, is helping to organise the initiative, committee member Sadie Bewey said: “May is the perfect month to get outdoors. Why not invite a work colleague to walk your Grow Green Mile together – perhaps discuss ideas, talk business, or simply enjoy a coffee along the way? It’s a great opportunity for corporate teams to give something back to the island.”\n
