SUMMARY:Fundraising event in support of Jamaica hurricane disaster relief
DESCRIPTION:The Vale Earth Fair is organising a fundraising event in support of the recovery efforts for the people of Jamaica where Hurricane Melissa has devastated large parts of the island and destroyed infrastructure.\nThe fundraiser takes place this Saturday, 8 November at the Golden Lion in Market Street from 7:30pm, with free entry. It will feature DJ’s aRK Sounds and Mr Bunny playing a selection of Jamaican classics covering reggae, ska, and dancehall alongside more recent reggae influenced tunes.\nHurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica on 28th October as a Category 5 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds reaching 185mph. This storm has been recorded as the strongest hurricane to hit Jamaica since record-keeping began, causing unprecedented damage across the island. The impact of the hurricane force winds was compounded by unprecedented rainfall with over 30 inches of rain recorded in some areas – not far off what Guernsey receives in a year!\nThe hurricane has led to total structural failures in many buildings, and major infrastructure including roads and power distribution are severely impacted complicating efforts by emergency services in their rescue and recovery operations.\nHurricane Melissa has left a profound impact on Jamaica with significant loss of life, extensive damage and ongoing challenges to recovery efforts. The situation remains critical as authorities assess the full extent of the damage and provide necessary aid to those affected.\nWith the Vale Earth Fair having featured a few Jamaican artists in the past, along with a host of other reggae artists, it seems appropriate to support the recovery efforts following the aftermath of the hurricane through an event celebrating Jamaican music.\n
