SUMMARY:Hazel Wynn: The Overview Effect
DESCRIPTION:Hazel Wynn’s debut solo exhibition at Private & Public Gallery opens to the public on Friday 7th November for a preview evening and drinks reception from 5-8pm.\nIntensely rich canvasses dramatically adorn the gallery spaces which meditate on a theme first put forward by space philosopher Frank White in his seminal publication The Overview Effect.\nThe Overview Effect is a psychological shift in awareness reported by astronauts when they view Earth from space and experience a profound sense of awe, unity and interconnectedness when seeing our planet as a small, fragile sphere suspended in the vastness of space coupled with feeling a deepened sense of responsibility to protect the planet.\nHazel Wynn, a Jersey-born artist with a passion for colour, draws inspiration from the world around her to create vibrant and emotionally resonant paintings. Trained at Chelsea College of Art in London, where she specialised in Textile Design, Hazel’s artistic journey has taken her from selling hand-painted textile designs in New York to dedicating her time to practicing Fine Art back in Jersey.\nHazel draws her influences from early abstractionists and the Washington Colour group, particularly artists like Helen Frankenthaler, Morris Louis, and Paul Jenkins.\nThe core of Hazel’s work revolves around the exploration of colour and its intricate relationships. Her paintings serve as windows into her world of emotional responses to nature. The artist approaches her canvas with a deliberate technique, laying it flat and often on the floor. Through a meticulous process of pouring and pulling liquid pools of paint across the surface, Hazel navigates the delicate balance between control and unpredictability. Her carefully layered swathes of  colour build depth and contribute to an overall sense of harmony and balance.\nDescribing the ideas behind the exhibition Gallery Director Chris Clifford said: “The feeling of connectivity is something that Hazel been striving to achieve through her art for many years. The awe she experiences while painting emerges when she works intuitively and embraces a sense of play.\n“This intuitive approach to capturing the ‘Master’s perspective’ is informed by the artists extensive study of abstract and historical painters. Artists like Helen Frankenthaler have provided a framework for embracing mistakes and playfulness, allowing the creative act to be a spontaneous engagement rather than a planned execution. Similarly, I can see how Hazel Wynn has been influenced by another American painter, Morris Louis, in her use of gravity and multiple layers of veiled colour to explore transparency and flow.\n“Hazel’s ambition is to convey the sublime and capture the emotional effect of light which connects her work to the Romantic movement, particularly the enduring power of J.M.W. Turner’s atmospheric canvases”.\nDescribing the paintings on display in this exhibition the artist Hazel Wynn said: “Through colour, texture, and form, my works ultimately invite viewers to feel the forces that bind us. By engaging with these abstract pieces, I invite viewers to connect with their inner landscape, recover a sense of awe, and embrace a unified vision for the stewardship of our planet – mirroring the profound perspective gained by astronauts experiencing the Overview Effect”.\n
