SUMMARY:Durrell Centenary Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join Music in Action at the Jersey Opera House on Saturday 11 October 2025 for a special evening marking the 100th anniversary of Gerald Durrell’s birth and celebrating the life of Jersey composer Derek Lawrence, a founding member of Music in Action since 2006.\nThis special concert will be both a celebration of Derek’s remarkable career and a heartfelt tribute to his life, creativity, and enduring passion for sharing music with others, a legacy that lives on through our outreach programme, giving local children the chance to experience music first-hand. The Gala will unite 150 musicians and schoolchildren from Jersey and Corfu in an animal-inspired programme performed by the Jersey Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of  internationally renowned conductor Eamonn Dougan.\nThe Gala Concert will be hosted by acclaimed West End star Rob Houchen, whose warm energy and vibrant style make him a favourite with audiences of all ages. Best known for his dazzling performances in hit shows like Les Misérables, Rob will bring fun, excitement, and a touch of West End magic to the stage, making this a joyful evening for the whole community.\nWith the Friday 10th September 7:00pm performance with Rob already sold out, families still have the chance to join the celebration whilst raising vital funds for both the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and Music in Action’s own outreach The DaCapo Academy singers , Janvrin School and Victoria College will perform the much-loved Durrell Suite, composed by Derek as a heartful tribute to Gerald Durrell, as well as West End star Rob Houchen who will perform the lively ‘Gnu’ and the ‘Hippopotamus Song’, which is, not only a treat for the audience but also an extraordinary opportunity for Jersey’s young musicians to be able to share the stage with such a star. Derek wrote and arranged hundreds of pieces of music from the hippopotamus song the audience will hear in the concert music from James Bond, Lord of the rings to his own magical compositions such as the Durrell suite which we are very proud to be performing, his Jersey Rhapsody, flute concerto, medleys for Durrell, RNLI, the scouts, hospice, Oscar Maclean Foundation and many more. He will be sorely missed and this is one last chance for islanders to pay tribute and hear his magnificent Durrell Suite” said James Mews MBE, Chairman of Music in Action. “By combining world-class performance with the voices of local children, we are celebrating not only important legacies, but also the power of education and community.”\n
