SUMMARY:Skipton night of the 5000s
DESCRIPTION:Runners of all ages and abilities are being encouraged to sign up for the ‘Skipton night of the 5000s’.\nThe event on Friday 4th July, sponsored by Skipton International, sees runners take part in a series of 5,000m races around the athletics track at Footes Lane.\nGuernsey Athletics Development Officer, Tom Druce, said it’s a really welcoming event for everyone: “So many people are happy to try a 5k park run or road run, so this is a very accessible distance that we know lots of people can comfortably achieve.\n“The athletics facility at Footes Lane is excellent, so this is a great opportunity for those who don’t usually take part in formal athletics events to give it a go. There is something really special about running on the track, with the crowd in the stand cheering when you pass them every 400m – and, as a bonus, it’s a good opportunity to beat your own personal best time.”\nIn previous years, just under 100 people have signed up to take part – running in heats of up to 20 athletes, with times ranging from around 30 minutes to those achieving more elite competition results.\nAs part of the evening, Skipton staff members will be getting involved in a special event, ‘The Skipton mile’. The one-mile race will be open to all Skipton staff members who fancy getting their trainers on and giving it a go.\nAaron Walden, Senior Commercial Manager at Skipton, said he’d be encouraging his colleagues to take part in both the Skipton Mile and the general event: “The races will certainly be enjoyable, but it’s also a really social evening that’s fun for everyone. Whether you’re looking to beat your PB or just stretch your legs after a day at the office, I’d tell anyone with an interest in running to come along.”\nAlong with the 5,000m event, Guernsey Athletics has organised some support races at the start of the evening, where the crowd will be able to enjoy watching the island’s elite Island Games athletes running shorter distances.\nThe ‘Skipton Night of the 5000s’ takes place from 6pm on Friday 4th July at Footes Lane, with all over-15s welcome. Further information and sign-up details can be found on the events page of the Guernsey Athletics website.\nThe entry fee for the night includes food and a drink from the bar so it’s hoped that many of those taking part will stay to socialise and enjoy the evening with their fellow athletes.\n\nMain picture shows (left to right): Tom Druce, Aaron Walden and Abi Galpin.\n
