SUMMARY:Barreau Art Scholarship Centenary Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:A unique exhibition will be held at the Berni gallery from Monday 07 April until 30 April 2025 with a special Preview evening on Tuesday 08 April from 5:30-7pm.\nThe Société Jersiaise is extremely grateful for the generous support of the Jersey Arts Centre in hosting the exhibition at the Berni Gallery.\nThe Barreau Art Scholarship was established in 1924 and this Centenary Exhibition celebrates work of Barreau Scholars across one hundred years, while also paying tribute to Arthur Hamptonne Barreau who was the inspiration behind the foundation of the Scholarship.\nFrom the very beginning, the Société Jersiaise was honoured to take on the custodianship of the Barreau Art Scholarship in selecting Barreau Scholars and\nadministering the fund.\nOne hundred years of supporting artists in Jersey is worthy of celebration. One hundred years of creativity and artistic endeavour is worthy of celebration.\nPast and present Barreau Scholars have been invited to contribute to this exhibition, choosing pieces they feel best represent their work since receiving the Barreau Art Scholarship. Many Barreau Scholars have gone on to extend their practice professionally and commercially, while others have pursued their creativity on a more personal basis. All are valued and respected by the Société Jersiaise as part of the Barreau Art Scholarship alumni, a prestigious and richly diverse group.\nThe stories shared with the Barreau Art Scholarship Centenary Research Project have been heartfelt and inspiring.\nBarreau Scholars have revealed that the award not only served a practical purpose but often acted as a motivation and affirmation. Selection as a Barreau Scholar was an encouragement to forge ahead along their chosen artistic pathway. These paths led to a fascinating array of outcomes from car design, surfboard design, architecture and jewellery, to painting, sculpture, printmaking and graphics. A full record of the project’s findings will be published by the Société Jersiaise later this year.\nThe Société Jersiaise is looking forward to the next one hundred years of the Barreau Art Scholarship with eager anticipation.\n
