SUMMARY:Bailiwick wildlife photography exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Guernsey Arts have announced the opening of the Greenhouse Gallery’s 2025 exhibitions with the 2025 Bailiwick Wildlife Photography exhibition, supported by Mourant.\nNow in its fourth year, this popular community exhibition features dynamic and colourful work from local wildlife photographers. From butterflies and puffins to seahorses and hedgehogs, and all animals in between, this show celebrates Guernsey’s glorious biodiversity in bold technicolour.\nThis year’s guest judge and featured photographer is renowned wildlife expert John Horton, whose special area of interest in this exhibition draws from his experiences as bird warden at the Alderney Bird Observatory. Renowned for its population of Gannets, Alderney is a prime location for documenting avian wildlife. The Observatory monitors, records and researches the bird population of Alderney including its seabirds and seasonal migrants, whilst encouraging the education and importance of avian ecology. Research statistics and findings from the Observatory are reported to academic groups monitoring climate change and also act as advice for policy makers on Alderney about matters that affect the avian population.\nButterfly by Nigel Turner\nRuss Fossey, Head of Arts Development, Guernsey Arts commented: “The Bailiwick Wildlife Open is always a highlight of our calendar for visitors… of all ages! It showcases the beauty of our Island’s natural habitats and the amazing hidden gems you can find within them. This year, we have been working with the Guernsey Nature Commission and the Pollinator Project to document and identify each species, and we are grateful for the support of Mourant, our 2025 supporter, who shares our values in supporting the importance of our local biodiversity.\n“We look forward to welcoming in a new year of growth and creativity with this show, which showcases the amazing talent of our community photographers. As part of the exhibition, the Guernsey Arts team will be hosting guided tours and artist workshops throughout the exhibition for schools and community groups as well as the wider public.”\nOver 70 Local Photographers on display\nThis year, the exhibition has had over 200 submissions. 72 photographers of all ages and skill levels will see their work on display, across categories including Birds, Insects, Marine, Bailiwick Animals, Patterns in Nature and Video & Film. The core judging panel for 2025 included Jared Fox (Guernsey Arts), Sharon Hickman (The Pollinator Project), Jessi Jennings (Guernsey Nature Commission) and John Horton (Alderney Bird Observatory).\nThere will be a prize given for each category as well as for the winner of the People’s Choice Award and a prize given for Young Bailiwick Wildlife Photographer of the Year. As always, the public will also be able to vote for their personal favourite when they visit the exhibition.\nThe Barry Wells Pollinator Award\n2025 sees the inaugural presentation of the Barry Wells Award, in memory of 2024’s Guest Judge Barry Wells. Barry was renowned for his stunning photography of Guernsey’s pollinators, as well as his passion for educating local children on their importance. Barry was co-founder and honorary President of The Pollinator Project, having co-founded the project in 2017 with Vanessa Crispini-Adams. This special award, funded by The Pollinator Project, is dedicated to Barry’s legacy of excellence and will be awarded to a student Pollinator photographer.\nThe Mourant Sustainability Award\nThis year’s edition of the Bailiwick Wildlife Photography Exhibition features an inaugural Sustainability Award, supported by Mourant. This accolade will be awarded to a photographer who has captured an image which celebrates the fragility, beauty, or resilience of island ecosystems, with a special focus on unique species or ecosystems native to the Bailiwick of Guernsey.\nJohn Lewis, Managing Partner of the Mourant Guernsey office, commented: “We are delighted to pledge our support to the 2025 Bailiwick Wildlife Photography Exhibition and launch the first ever Sustainability Award, alongside supporting the delivery of educational resources and half-term wildlife workshops for children.
