SUMMARY:Inside Out: Unique exhibition of art created by prisoners from HMP La Moye.
DESCRIPTION:The States of Jersey Prison Service is proud to present ‘Inside Out’, a unique exhibition featuring a collection of art created by prisoners from HMP La Moye.\nThe showcase, which is hosted by ArtHouse Jersey at the new location of Capital House, Church Street, St Helier, opens its doors to the public on Thursday 15th August and will run through to Sunday 25th August.\nVisitors to the gallery will be treated to a range of art from paintings and drawings to ceramic work, photography, music and crochet. A number of the pieces will be available to buy.\nEach artwork tells a story, offering glimpses into the personal journeys, emotions, and reflections of the artists. The exhibition provides a rare opportunity to witness the creativity that can arise from adversity and the transformative power of art within prisons.\nArt classes are offered to the prisoners as part of the education programme, which helps prepare them for their release and successful re-integration into the community.\nTaking part in art at the prison has proven to have a therapeutic effect, assisting with improved thinking and social skills and greater emotional self-regulation, which stimulates a sense of personal well-being.\nHead of Education at the prison, Sanja Koppen said: “We’ve got approximately 45 prisoners taking part and we hope the exhibition serves as a platform for social change, inviting visitors to think about the themes of rehabilitation, and the potential for personal growth. We want to encourage viewers to see the power of art as a transformative tool for healing and self-expression ultimately empowering individuals to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society.\nLucy Blackmore, Art teacher at le Moye said: “We’re honoured to collaborate with ArtHouse Jersey in presenting this exhibition. The chance to showcase the work of prisoners is a way of motivating and engaging them in creative activity. This raises individual self-esteem and opens minds to engage in other educational opportunities, and behaviour management programmes: all geared towards helping prisoners to make life improving decisions. This all contributes towards our journey of ‘releasing better neighbours’.\nBy bringing these artworks to the public’s attention, we hope to spark meaningful conversations, challenge perceptions, and promote understanding and empathy within our community. The exhibition will be officially opened by Education Minister Deputy Rob Ward.\n
