SUMMARY:‘A new light’ exhibition by Charlie Haydn Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Following on from successful solo exhibitions in Beijing and Seoul, this is the first time in three years that Charlie has exhibited at Private & Public Gallery and we are pleased to present 11 unique paintings and 7 limited edition prints.\nDescribed recently as a ‘Millennial Hopper’, referring to the 20th century American realist painter whose images brilliantly captured themes of social isolation, such as in the eerie light of the all-night coffee stand painting Nighthawks in 1942, Charlie’s new works have also been heightened by the artist’s characteristic and beautiful use of light and colour.\nBut, where Hopper would paint solitary or isolated figures, Charlie’s latest paintings replace this with empty, singular furniture, where the viewer can project themselves into the scene.\nIn describing his work the artist says, “I do this as a nod to the idea that we can all feel isolated or distant from those we love. There is a strong relatability to this subject for us all as humans. Of course, it is the contemporary, graphic style and a nod to modernism, as well as the collaging of items such as phones and laptops which the part of ‘millennial’ refers to”.\n“I’ve found an extremely important part of my process is understanding how light can be used as a tool to create an emotional atmosphere, whether through sunlight, moonlight or artificial light. I wanted the show title to reflect the importance of this. I’ve always felt as though the daytime paintings possess a strong sense of stillness, tranquillity and even hopefulness whilst the night time more of a sense of contemplation and perhaps melancholy. For me, they act as Yin and Yang, opposites yet interconnected”.\nPerfectly timed at the height of summer when the gallery spaces are filled with light I hope you can join us for a great summer party.\nOur opening times are 12-6pm weekdays and 10am-2pm Saturdays and the exhibition runs until 27th July.\n
