SUMMARY:Guernsey-themed photography exhibition by Simon Roberts
DESCRIPTION:A Guernsey-themed exhibition by acclaimed UK photographer Simon Roberts opens on 30 June at Guernsey Museum at Candie.\n‘Between Tides’ is an insight into the harbours of St Peter Port and St Sampsons. The unique exhibition is the result of Mr Roberts’ 2022 artist residency in the island. He was tasked with creating a new body of work exploring the harbours and Mr Roberts visited several times during the year to take photographs and video.\nTrident Ferries captain-Gary Ward, photographed by Simon Roberts, St. Peter’s Port, Guernsey\nCelebrated as one of the most successful UK photographers, Simon Roberts is recognised for his large-format tableaux photographs. He has exhibited widely, and his photographs reside in major public collections including the George Eastman House, Deutsche Börse Art Collection and Victoria & Albert Museum.\nMatt Harvey, Senior Curator at Guernsey Museums, said: “Simon’s project in Guernsey has offered him the opportunity to record the changing aspects of the\nisland’s harbours across an entire calendar year. He has witnessed the complex web of occupations and pastimes that the harbours support, as well as documenting many of the people whose lives are intertwined with them. He has been fortunate to have gained access to areas of the ports that the public usually don’t see.”\nTo precede the first day of the exhibition, there is a chance to hear Mr Roberts talk about his long career and experience working in Guernsey. This free talk takes place at Guernsey Museum on Thursday 29 June from 5.30pm for an hour. Roberts will be in conversation with Jean-Christophe Godet, Artistic Director of the Guernsey Photography Festival. Further information about this event can be found here.\nThe Artist in Residence programme is a collaboration developed since 2016 between the Guernsey Photography Festival and Guernsey Museums & Galleries. The aim is to create a collection of contemporary photography by world famous artists about the Bailiwick of Guernsey. So far the residency has welcomed Martin Parr (UK), Klavdij Sluban (Slovenia), Michelle Sank (South Africa), Jason Wilde (UK), Mark Power (UK), Gregoire Eloy (France), Sian Davey (UK) and Cristina De Middel (Spain/ Mexico).\nThis exhibition has been printed entirely on recyclable materials. The printing partner is Agelia and the transport partner is Jacksons.\n‘Between Tides’ is open daily until 28 August 10.00-17.00. Normal admission applies, so entry is free for Discovery Pass holders and their children.\n
