DESCRIPTION:Family Nursing & Home Care (FNHC) and The Jersey Ostomy Society are holding their biennial Stoma Exhibition on Thursday 7th July from 13:00 – 17:00 at the Savoy Hotel, St. Helier.\nThe Stoma Exhibition will feature 16 stands, hosted by UK companies who offer different stoma related items including stoma appliances, stoma support wear and clothing.\nFNHC’s Specialist Nurse for stoma care will be in attendance as well as The Jersey Ostomy Society Chair and Committee Members.\nThe event is open to anyone with a stoma or anyone caring for someone with a stoma whether that be family member of paid carer or nurse. The event might also be of interest to those people who may need a stoma in the future.\n\nWhat is a stoma?\nStoma is a Greek word meaning ‘opening’ or ‘mouth’. A stoma is an opening on the abdomen that can be connected to either your digestive or urinary system. This will allow waste (urine or faeces) to be diverted out of the body.\nWhy do people have stomas?\nThere are many reasons why people may need a stoma. Some of the common reasons include:\n\nBowel cancer\n\nBladder cancer\n\nInflammatory bowel disease\n\nCrohn’s Disease\n\nUlcerative Colitis\n\nDiverticulitis\n\nAn obstruction to the bladder or bowel\n\nIs a stoma permanent?\nYou can either have a temporary stoma or a permanent stoma, depending on the reason for the stoma formation.\n
